Is it Alright for a White Person to...

...be offended if a Black person uses a racist slur against them?

I was at work last night, working the graveyard with a coworker and around 1:00 AM it seemed like the entire ghetto of Saskatoon decided to hop on a bus and come pay us a visit. One of the guys who did was this clearly drunk Black teenager who, while not yelling "Imma gunna fucking kill ya!" to someone over his cell phone, called my friend quite a few different slurs such as "cracker" and, oddly enough, "white bitch." Seeing as how the only thing my friend was trying to do was make him stop yelling/swearing and since it was no longer the 80s, my friend got offended and told him to stop being racist or he would call the cops.

Needless to say, the black guy got all of his panties up in a bunch and went and complained to management over my friend's accusations of racism towards him. The manager was furious when he walked up to my friend, but I think once he heard the story he calmed down, but my friend is still going to be reviewed by management because "racism is unacceptable in the workplace."

Complete bullshit, is it not? I remember being told growing up that all people are equal, so therefore shouldn't all racism be racism? My friend didn't like the comments, so apparently he is racist. Go figure.

What, are there like, five black people in Canada? I've experienced this more times than I could probably recollect on one hand (being called that shit). There are no "double standards" in my world. If you think you can use that kind of language you are a piece of shit, period.

This is complete bullshit. If racism is a crime, it's a crime for white, black, yellow, red, and purple.

I hate the fact that a white man standing in a public place yelling "******," will get beat on by everyone. A black man standing in a public place yelling "honkey," or "cracker," gets no reaction. Both are derogatory terms. Neither are acceptable. Both should elicit the same reaction.

Either we're equal, or we aren't. Don't tell me a black person can't be racist. Don't tell me us white folk need to tolerate racism against whites to make up for the past. It was shitty and wrong then, it is shitty and wrong now. How about we just eliminate racism, treat all races as equals, acknowledge that every race has total ass-munches, and use non-racial terms to describe the bastards?

No, I don't feel strongly against racism. Why do you ask?

You're asking is it alright to be offended if someone offends you?

:confused:Uh, yeah. No matter who's offending whom.:dunno:

The whole issue of positive and negative racism is very interesting.

I mean, often people seem to actually enjoy getting talked in that gangsta tone, like they are being real or something, and a lot of peopla are making a career out of just talking ghetto trash

It annoys the hell outta me

I think if someone goes ahead and talks racist shit at me, he just buys a ticket to me paying him back same way.

I managed a multicultural football (Soccer) team in the nineties and we had people from germany, morocco, iran, south korea, argentina, sweden, uganda, you name it.

On the field it sometimes got hilarious, and we had read cards pulled from refs for calling each other names after messing up a goal shot or a save etc.

Either no racist lingo or everybody is free to use it :2 cents:

I've been saying the same thing. It's ok for blacks to say what they want and call us white people anything and get away with it, but when we white people do anything it's then considered racist.

*True Story*

A few weeks ago I was in a Family Dollar and all I wanted was a drink. I had my backpack with me and the machine was at the front of the store. 2 black women said I had to leave my bag at the front of the store. I said I am at the front of the store and I'll be at the register in 5 seconds. Again they said the same thing but with total ignorance towards me. I had enough and I said "Fuck You, %@@%!#" and walked out. Both of those fine black women followed me out and just went into a frenzy. They called me every single name in the book and said the police wanted to see me. I just kept going and laughing! Oh, they told me I'm banned from that store which isn't a big deal. To this day, no cops have stopped me. :D

The point of that story is if I was to do the same thing to a black customer I'd be fired on the spot, where as those 2 outstanding members of the community are still there as far as I know.

In either case it's racist, it's done by more people than just blacks and whites and it's wrong in all cases.

The reality is the perception of it's meaning or significance is different depending on the circumstances probably because in the history of per se racism (in the States) there hasn't been widespread hate 'acts' which have accompanied hate 'speech' by varying, other groups.

Plas, if you read one post this year, make it this one.

you're friend will probably get fired for this either directly or indirectly.......he is now marked.
If I was him I just might push it and try to get the other guy canned for calling him white bitch and whatever other racist names he said.
Like I said he's marked. In this age and day companies cover their asses and if that means canning some white guy for even the hint of racism they will do it, but theyll probably find some other reason not related to do it just to avoid a can of worms.

I think your friend should make an issue of it, you know the black guy would if it was reversed.
If the business does nothing maybe contact some lawyers, maybe one of them will bite.
His time is numbered anyway, might as well strike first.

It is ok to have a backbone too.

We whites are just as guilty as blacks and other races. But let's face the truth here: racism is alive and well in this country and it's not going away anytime soon. I live by 2 black families. My next door neighbor is a black couple and they're cool as hell and we get along fine. Does that mean I'm going to go with them to their favorite places and socialize with their friends? No it doesn't. The same thing with them and my social areas. I don't have a problem with them and they don't have a problem with me. It's the other black people, and white people too that give each race a bad name.

This post is rich...there is just so much here which points to the problem.

I'll just start with this, why shouldn't individuals be the only ones who give themselves a 'bad' or 'good' name.

If you think about it, it's the collectivist blame, derisiveness, etc. which is the problem.(IMO of course.:o)

Why wouldn't it be okay for one individual to feel offended by another individual....'irregardless'?:1orglaugh

He should sue the company he works for. Being brought up on racism and investigated even though it was explained how it went down is unforgiveable. If it's on his permanent work record now and/or he is "let go" by the company for this incident. Get a lawyer and sue the fuck out of those incompetent cunts he works for. THEN once it's over and done with regardless of result take it to the papers. Have a field day with it. He is after all 100% innocent going by what the OP said. So why should his name and career be marked because of someone else. I would stand up and do something about it if it was me. Kick up a stink over it. Nothing irritates me more than being falsely accused of something. Get a lawyer and Jackie Chan the life and attitude out of the company in question. I know the lawyer thing might not be a choice at the moment (to sue) but it should be kept in mind for future reference.

Some of those things could point to the problem I agree, but it all depends on the person's perception. Not to sound racist, but I'm a white guy, I do white people things. I listen to rock 'n roll and not rap or hip-hop. I can't dance worth a shit. I speak with full sentences and I know who my father is. Now that's probably considered racist by those fine African Americans and that's fine with me. I speak my mind but not fully on here because my real thoughts would be get me banned for life.

The answer is YES. Here the dumbass created a hostile work environment for your friend & management would have had the police toss his ass out.

So...what about the black guy who listens to rock 'n roll, can't dance worth a shit, speaks in full sentences and knows who his father is.....?

The fact that you consider something like that racist speaks volumes and should sort cause some reflection on your part when you ask yourself where from does 'racism' continue to get it's fuel. Aren't we all Americans this weekend btw...?

PS...speaking in truncated sentences or slang is a universal behavior...Just sayin':o

No one should be abused based on the colour of their skin. As long as your friend didn't bring up his colour when repimanding him then he has done nothing wrong and no further action needs to be taken and clearly then the black guy made the argument into a race thing of his own accord and he should be the one arrested. If he has any decency when he sobers up he''ll drop the complaint and apologise to your friend.
