"Nashville Skyline Rag" is an instrumental by the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan that appears on his 1969 album Nashville Skyline.

Background

[edit]

Bob Dylan had never made an instrumental before, so "Nashville Skyline Rag" was the first instrumental piece to ever appear on a Dylan record, as journalist Andy Gill wrote, it is a "pukka piece of work in sprightly bluegrass style".[2]

Recording

[edit]

The sessions for Nashville Skyline spawned two unknown recordings, one of which, according to author Clinton Heylin, could have been an early version of "Nashville Skyline Rag"[3]

Reception

[edit]

Rolling Stone editor Paul Nelson stated in a review of Nashville Skyline that it "serves as an instrumental introduction to the album’s excellent personnel".[4] In a review of Nashville Skyline for Paste Magazine, critic Matt Mitchell calls it a "palatable, extended bed of rustic tones and jaunts."[5]

Legacy

[edit]

"Nashville Skyline Rag" is one of two tracks on Nashville Skyline to never be performed live.[6]
