The time between updates might not be slower than most devs, but it's what's in each update that's the problem.I disagree. I think that hiring someone is strictly necessary for speed it up the work. There are branches in which I'm not interested, like the second job, but the dev has expressed that he has great expectationts with that and is one of his surprises. Maybe many people will like it, why take them out that pleasure?
Actually, the dev isn't slower than others which develop a similar quality game. I'm thinking for example in Jessica O'neil's Hard News, for me the renders and the story writing are at the same level and the time between updates is the same too. But, the difference is that this game is four times more popular, has the triple of patreons, and more than four times of earnings. Then, we would expect that this dev would build a team to reduce the time between updates, but he hasn't done it.
On the other hand, the dev of Fashion Business, a game that despite isn't at the same level in writing but has great renders too and many more animations, built a solid team. The quality wasn't reduced and he delivers updates in less than two months, the half of time that he delivered before. FB has the fourth part of popularity than AWAM and still his dev has more patreons, because they recognize his commitment. He is creating a brand and a good reputation. That's the difference between someone responsible when he is increasing the earnings and someone who is not.
Again, if L&P keeps doing half-day updates it will be 9+ years before the game is completed. That's based on updates taking 3 months at minimum and assuming that each day will have just as many events in the latter stages as they do now and thus require being split into 2 updates. (19 full days left = 38 updates x 3 month update cycle = 114 months = 9 years, 6 months).
Now, things might change if branches get clipped naturally and days later on in the game start to have less events, but we don't know if that will happen and we're still not even halfway through the playable days. To just get to the full day 15 will take us to mid-2022 and there will still be 15 more days to go after that.
Yes, getting other people to work with them would help, but I don't see that happening because, for one, you have to pay people for their work and if L&P doesn't have the money to do that then they can't do it, and secondly, it can be difficult to trust someone else with you passion project because you need them to be on the same page and getting someone like that is probably too hard and too time-consuming, and could affect the development of this VN even more.
Therefore, the only way I can see for this to get finished before the middle of this decade is to trim some of the fat off the game itself. Yes, some people might not be happy to see certain minor side characters get cut out and their storylines ended earlier than previously planned, but this is a case where "the needs of the many outweight the need of the few". Right now the "many" is everyone who doesn't want this game to end because L&P bit off more than they can chew and realises they can't possibly spend 9 years on one VN and abandons it because they got burned out.
Trim the fat, lessen the scope, and set a 3 year goal for completion because the current pace is ridiculous.
